I-66 Highways for LIFE, Fairfax County VA
Owner: Virginia Department of Transportation
Traffic Count: Not available (exit ramp)
Work Window: 7-hour nighttime closure
The first precast concrete paving project in Virginia was funded in part as a demonstration project by the FHWA Highways for LIFE program. The specifications contained a unique provision that defined the successful bidder as the contractor who proposed to construct the most pavement for the maximum contract price of $5,000,000. The Super-SlabĀ® system was used on the WB exit ramp from I-66 which connected to Route 50. The challenging three-dimensional geometry included a horizontal S-curve and the requirement to match into an adjacent concrete lane that remained in place. A trial installation also had to be completed in order for the system to be approved.
